In Schijndel we played a matinee in a wine bar. A room like that is small and hard: wooden tables, glasses, a stone floor. Everything you play comes back off the walls, and that is exactly why an acoustic line-up belongs there.
So we played there largely unamplified. Three voices, a guitar, an acoustic bass and a cajón are loud enough in a place like that. Whoever sat at the table by the window could hear us perfectly well without having to break off their conversation.
Once the tables fill up
A matinee has a pleasant quality: it finishes while it is still light outside. In practice that mostly means people stay put. The tables fill up, someone who has just walked in joins them, and the company turns into a single audience of its own accord.
Something can come in then, but in a wine bar that is a matter of millimetres. Playing louder works against you: the sound bounces and then nobody can hear anything. We would rather move closer to the tables and let the room do the work.
An afternoon that only ends once it has gone dark outside.
