A woodland café has two rooms: the terrace and the weather

Side A · on the terrace

In Best we played a birthday in a woodland café. A place like that has no stage and no cloakroom: there is a terrace among the trees, a bar inside, and guests walking between the two all afternoon.

Outdoors sound carries less far, so the light amplification comes along. Still, the principle stays the same: soft enough for the conversation at the picnic table to carry on, loud enough that you can tell from the other side of the terrace which song it is.

Once it turns cooler

Then the party moves inside, and so do we

Side B · inside by the bar

At some point in the evening it turns cooler under the trees and the terrace slowly empties. We pack up, walk inside and are standing there again fifteen minutes later. That quarter of an hour is not an estimate: it is exactly what we need, in both directions.

Inside everything sounds more direct. Four walls, a lower ceiling and a stone floor do half the work, so the amplification can take a step back. Louder is not needed; standing closer together does more.

The same birthday, two rooms, and not a moment when the music drops out.

Questions about a birthday in Best

Can’t find your question? Call or WhatsApp Theo on +31 6 55 33 58 54.

Can you play both outside and inside on the same day?

Yes, we often do. Moving takes us fifteen minutes: unloading, setting up and plugging in is the same work as packing away. In the meantime the party simply carries on.

What do you need from the venue?

A dry, level spot of 1.5 × 2.5 metres and a socket nearby. Nothing more. A stage is welcome but not necessary at all; a corner next to the bar works just as well.

What if it rains all day?

Then we play inside, or under a canopy if there is one. We settle that with the venue on the day itself; wooden instruments prefer to stay dry.

Do you come to Oirschot, Son or Boxtel as well?

Yes, all three are within our half hour from Eindhoven. For Oirschot and Son en Breugel we even have a page of our own, because we have played there before.
