For dinner parties in Nuenen

Music for a table, not for a hall

Side A · at the table

A twenty-first birthday dinner is an evening with a programme. There are courses, and between the courses people stand up to say something: a friend with a story, a parent who does not quite keep it together. In Nuenen we played between those moments, not through them.

That asks for something different from a party. We play at the table at conversation level, we stop the moment someone stands up, and we pick up again as the applause dies down. Anyone who wants to listen can, and anyone who wants to catch up does not have to raise their voice.

Once the speeches are done

After that the music may take over

Side B · after dessert

After the last word and the last plate the evening changes. The tables move aside and the youngest half of the company is first to its feet. The generation that once recorded the tapes follows of its own accord, usually two songs later.

Even then, louder is not the goal. At the edge of the room a small group always keeps talking, and that conversation belongs to the evening just as much. We read the room and choose the volume accordingly, not by the time on the clock.

The songs the parents once met to, sung for someone who has just turned twenty-one.

Frequently asked questions · Nuenen

Questions about a dinner party in Nuenen

Can’t find your question? Call or WhatsApp Theo on +31 6 55 33 58 54.

Can you stop for the speeches?

Yes, and at a twenty-first that is half the job. Agree in advance roughly who speaks when, or give us a sign on the night. We stop, and start again as the applause dies down.

Do you fit in a restaurant’s function room?

Almost always. We need 1.5 × 2.5 metres and one socket. In a room full of tables we usually play in a corner, so the staff can keep moving unhindered.

Can the birthday guest request a song?

Please do, preferably a few weeks in advance. We will see whether it works with three voices, guitar, bass and cajón. If it does not suit that line-up we will say so honestly and look for something that does.

What time do you start?

Usually as the first guests sit down, but the programme decides. Setting up takes fifteen minutes, so we can be ready well before the aperitif without getting in the way of the table plan.
